Description
Sergiu Laszlo emerged from the dynamic artistic environment of Cluj-Napoca, where he continues to live and work. Trained at the University of Art and Design in the same city, his formation reflects the dialogue between conceptual discipline and painterly instinct characteristic of the Cluj School. His practice engages a subdued chromatic register and a meditative handling of surface, oscillating between figuration and abstraction in ways that probe perception, temporality, and the ambiguity of representation.
Estopia Art Gallery presented his first solo exhibition, Lighting Grey (Bucharest, 2019), followed by Stolen Moments (Lugano, 2019–2020), consolidating his position within a generation attentive to the poetics of visual silence. Prior to these shows, he participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Going East (Romanian Cultural Institute, London, 2017), Rebellive Art / Conscious (Budapest, 2018), and I Don’t Emanate Carbon (Halucinarium – Triaj Creative, Bucharest, 2018). His imagery often relies on restrained tonal contrasts, suggesting atmospheres rather than narratives and reflecting a sustained exploration of introspective spaces within the broader context of contemporary Romanian painting.
