Alex Bodea

b. Cluj, Romania, 1981

Additional info:

Alex Bodea’s practice is situated between drawing, visual reporting, poetry and spoken performance, using text and image as reduced instruments of observation. Trained at the University of Arts and Design in Cluj, where she graduated in 2011, she has developed a body of work shaped by mobility, urban experience and the act of witnessing. Born in Cluj in 1981 and currently based in Berlin, Bodea records everyday street life, anonymous passers by and scenes from the cultural field, translating them into a concise graphic language in which writing and drawing operate together. Her Visual Notes archive, alongside projects such as Line Poems of Alex Bodea and Fantoches, reflects her sustained interest in the spoken and performative potential of drawing. Bodea has produced visual reports in relation to institutions including Serralves Foundation, Martin Gropius Bau, HAU, Berliner Festspiele, Deutsche Oper and Deutsches Theater, while also documenting the work of figures such as Benjamin Verdonck, Salomé Lamas, Yevgenia Belorusets, Karl Ove Knausgård and Peter Sellars. Her work addresses forms of displacement, gender, queer identity, marginality and non patriarchal models, while retaining the immediacy of field observation and the precision of diaristic notation.
