Additional info:
Firu Zamfirescu, born Mihai Vladimir Zamfirescu was a well-renowned Romanian painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest and later became a professor at the same institution. His work gained both national and international acclaim, particularly for its distinctive compositions that blend Byzantine iconography with abstract artistic sensibilities. While embracing surrealist elements, Zamfirescu’s art remains grounded in the rigorous techniques of the Renaissance. His paintings explore themes such as virtuosity and spirituality, approached from a non-religious perspective. Set against a backdrop of agonizing mythologies and stark realities, his works evoke an ethereal, timeless atmosphere. His delicate perception of the human body, often depicted in fragile, elongated forms, is framed within solid compositions and highlighted with subtle contours and harmonious colors. Discussing his creative process, Zamfirescu emphasised the silent act of witnessing a painterly scene unfolding on the canvas. His works were widely exhibited in Paris, Stockholm, London, Madrid, Monaco, New York, New Delhi and many cities across Romania. Notable collections featuring his works include Tate Gallery, London and The Royal House of Norway, as well as other public and private collections in countries such as Romania and Sweden.
