Additional info:
George Anghelescu is a Romanian multimedia artist who intertwines pop-culture references with a postmodernist sensibility and an acute criticism of contemporary society. Anghelescu graduated from the National University of Arts in Bucharest and later studied painting at the Academy of Belle Arts in Rome, becoming one of the most promising emerging artists in Romania. He works with different techniques such as painting, both acrylic and oil, collages or stencils, incorporating various mediums. His creative process involves a laborious and articulate practice, building narratives that question the political discourses of democracy that assembled Romania after the 1990s. Through his spectrum of vivid and neon colours, the use of kitsch elements and the choice of contextual circumstances in which the characters find themselves, Anghelescu’s work, often employing irony, tries to undermine the assumed modernity of postsocialism. Exceeding the traditional figurative style and common portrayals of social interactions, Anghelescu places himself in-between an observer and an active critic of the social environment in Romania. His works have been exhibited locally and internationally in countries such as Germany, the US, Israel, Italy, and the Czech Republic. Anghelescu currently lives and works in Prague.
