Petre Velicu

b. Bucharest, Romania, 1950

Additional info:

Petre Velicu is a visual artist born in Bucharest in 1950. He studied at the Nicolae Grigorescu Fine Arts Institute in the painting department. In 1978 he received the two-year Theodor Aman municipal scholarship and soon after he was accepted in the Romanian Artists’ Union. In 1990, after his important participation at Salon d’automne in Paris, Velicu decided to move to Paris. Velicu’s paintings are a remarkable incursion between surrealism and magical realism. Navigating both figurative and abstract shapes, his paintings represent symbolic elements that coalesce into real and imaginary realms. Colourful, with playful shades of light and darkness, his paintings are said to resemble the fantastical and unexpected world of Hieronymus Bosch. For his lesser known works on paper, the croquis highlights the essence of the human body transferred later in his complex, painterly compositions. He took part in national group exhibitions at Atelier 35, Orizont and Simeza galleries, as well as international exhibitions in Bulgaria, Switzerland, China. His works are included in private collections worldwide, in France, Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, the U.S and Canada.
