Description

Adam Henein is known for being one of Egypt's prominent artists and sculptors. He was born in 1929 in Cairo. His work was greatly influenced by ancient Egyptian art and Egyptian icons like pyramids and hieroglyphs.

Henein studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts in Cairo, graduating in 1953. He then went on to study in Munich and Paris, where he lived for 25 years until 1996. Henein was also known for his commitment to preserving and promoting his cultural heritage. Upon his return to Egypt, he founded in Aswan the International Sculpture Symposium and spent a decade restoring the famous Sphinx of Giza. Henein’s legacy is unparalleled, a museum under his name was founded in Egypt and houses a collection of the artist's work, including sculptures, paintings and drawings, as well as his private collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Henein's work mainly consisted of sculptures featuring stylized human forms, animals and abstract shapes. The artist preferred  working with natural materials such as stone, bronze and wood. Henein is also a talented painter, using ancient techniques like painting on papyrus sheets with natural pigments. He also used Indian ink on paper to represent abstract subjects and geometric forms that can be linked to his sculpture.

Adam Henein has held solo exhibitions in Egypt as well as in Europe and was part of group shows around the world.

His works are housed by prestigious collections such as Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah, UAE; Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah, UAE; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, US; The Museum of Egyptian Modern Art, Cairo, Egypt and the The Khalid Shoman Collection, Amman, Jordan.

This work on paper by Henein is remarkable through its sensuality and its purity of form. With just a black crayon, Henein explores angles and crevices, using light and dark tones to create a voluptuous form that sets the viewer’s imagination free.
