Description

Aida Halloum is a Lebanese artist born in Kuwait in 1967. A student of Fatima El Hajj, she  graduated from the Lebanese University with a Fine Arts diploma in 1993. Her works are mostly centered around landscapes or scenes of domestic life. In a recent article about Lebanese landscape artists featured in Gallery Magazine, Halloum was compared to her predecessors Etel Adnan and Saliba Doueihy who stripped landscapes of all details and rendered them as barren stretches of color, romanticizing in their own way the simple beauty of rural nature that they saw in front of them. Halloum on the other hand, seems to have brought back an aspect of figuration in her works: “While fully figurative. She also uses overlapping patches of abstract hues, like a puzzle piece coming together to form a panorama” (Gallery Magazine).

Halloum has worked as an art teacher in several institutions in Lebanon and continues to exhibit, most recently her works having been exhibited at LAU school of Arts and Sciences, in January 2023.

In this wonderful landscape piece by Aida Halloum, one can really sense the recent shift towards figuration by contemporary painters within the art history of the Levant. In a composition similar to those seen in works by earlier modern landscape artists from the region, Halloum brings a new adoration of nature and beauty, filling her canvas with a plethora of detail, texture and light, vague enough to create a sense of dream-like whimsy.
