Description
Alexandru Ciucurencu was a Romanian painter who started painting in 1916 as a disciple to a painter in Tulcea and later studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest (1921-1928). He made his artistic debut at the Official Salon in Bucharest in 1930. After working with the artists from the Baia Mare School, he studied at the Julian Academy in Paris and in André Lhote's atelier. In 1948, he became a professor and later an editor (1957-1968) at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest.
Ciucurencu’s work evolved from an exultant use of colour to a more refined palette, concise design and geometric compositions. In his early career, he painted still lifes, nudes and landscapes, but after 1944, he changed his theme to historical and social subjects. He also painted portraits of cultural personalities and workers, as well as industrial landscapes.
