Additional info:
Alexandru Phoebus was a painter and graphic artist from Romania. He began his studies at the Fine Art School in Bucharest, eventually renouncing his formal university education to co-found the student union Belle Arte Association, which later became the Free Academy of Art. Phoebus also attended the classes of the Julian Academy in Paris. In 1931 he co-founded the art association Our Group together with other young artists such as Tache Papatriandafil and Margareta Sterian. Phoebus’ works are marked by a modern painting style, intertwining expressionist and constructivist influences in unique approaches to shape and colour. His paintings often depict urban landscapes, such as deserted streets or city outskirts, in which the buildings have slightly distorted proportions, giving a haunting yet animated sensation. The Museum of Art Collections Bucharest holds a vast selection of Phoebus’s works, other of his paintings being sold at auctions many times.
