Description
András Szabó (b. 1980, Târgu Mureș, Romania) is a Romanian contemporary artist with Hungarian heritage who graduated from the University of Fine Arts and Design in Cluj-Napoca. After he completed the MFA course at the same university, Szabó followed the university’s PhD program in fine art.
Through his precise technique of scratching off black paint layers from initially white surfaces, Szabó achieves to assemble multi-layered, large-scale graphic works. His practice revolves around dichotomies such as light/darkness, hypnotically capturing the relation between man and machine alongside the human search for one’s own identity. A circular aura of light often surrounds the faces of Szabó’s characters, consolidating moments of junction between introspection, silence, and intense emotional states.
In 2018, András Szabó was selected as one of the artists in residency to be supported by KASZ at the International Steel and Metal Art Symposium in Kecskemét, Hungary. Szabó’s works have been exhibited around Romania, in both solo and group shows. Internationally, his works have been presented in institutions such as the MB-XL Gallery in Brussels or Várfok Gallery, Budapest. His works are part of important collections in Romania, France, Hungary, Belgium, Israel, and Germany.
