Description
Cadavre Exquis is a technique where a group collaboratively assembles a collection of words or images, a game where participants take turns writing or drawing on a sheet of paper, folding it to hide their contribution, and then passing it to the next player for further additions. This game became popular in artistic circles during the 1920s when Surrealist artists adopted it to create collaborative compositions.
It is exceedingly rare to have both Tristan Tzara, the founder of the Dada movement, and André Breton, the theorist of the Surrealism movement—who were both friends and rivals—participating as players. In the last 25 years, no Cadavre Exquis works involving Tristan Tzara and André Breton have been featured in a public auction.
