Description

Arthur Verona (b. 1868 in Brăila, Romania – d. 1946 in Bucharest, Romania) was a Romanianpainter of Aromanian origin. He is associated with a group of late-19th century painters – amongst them most notably Nicolae Grigorescu and Ion Andreescu –  who adopted the plein-air techniques of the Barbizon School in rural France, translating them to the local cultural context.

Verona’s style and compositions may be considered somewhat eclectic, as the painter aimed to accommodate the spontaneity of plein-airism with his personal sensibility towards Classicism and Post-Impressionism.

Demonstrating a vast knowledge in Western European art, Verona painted rural landscapes and scenes of daily village life, portraits of important figures of the time, still life paintings as well as monumental frescos at the Royal Palace in Bucharest. The rural imagery in Verona’s works construct an idyllic atmosphere of country life, as the skillful contrasts between brighter and darker tones make the villagers at work or leisure emerge as vibrant and complex characters.

Throughout his life, Verona exhibited his works in Bucharest, as well as Athens and Munich.
