Description
Aurel Jiquidi was a Romanian painter and graphic artist born in Bucharest on October 25th, 1896. He was the son of the graphic artist Constantin Jiquidi. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest and then studied painting in Paris and Rome (1920). After returning from Rome, Jiquidi worked for progressive Romanian publications and created dramatic drawings with anti-fascist themes such as “Terrors of War” and “Legionaries were here” from 1936, as well as sketches of scenes from the revolutionary movement in Romania. He also created a series of drawings relating to the 1907 peasant uprising and illustrated books by Ion Creangă and Mihail Sadoveanu. Among other prizez, Jiquidi was also awarded the State Prize of the Socialist Republic of Romania. In the 1920-1930s, he practised a style of drawing with thick lines, abundant hatching in all directions and expressive, nervous and emotional contours.
