Description

Dan Mihălțianu (b. 1954 in Bucharest, Romania) is a Romanian artist working with many mediums, such as video and installation to consolidate an artistic practice that is rooted in a careful research process. Alongside Călin Dan and Josif Kiraly, Mihălțianu is a co-founder of the subREAL group which emerged during the 1990s.

Employing creative techniques of archiving, since the 1980s Mihălțianu’s practice has revolved around an intertwined critique of both social and historical events that marked Romanian culture in the last decades. His artistic discourse deconstructs and reassembles at once social dichotomies such as between periphery and centre, revolt and revolution, tracing a new understanding of contemporary Romanian politics by questioning the political power exercised over citizens. His recent works equally reflect on topics such as climate change, the current state of healthcare, or economic crises.

Mihălțianu’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in a wide range of institutions and shows. Notably, one of his installations was shown, alongside works by  Belu-Simion Făinaru and Miklós Onucsán, at the Romanian Pavilion during the 58th Edition of the Venice Biennale. His works were included in exhibitions at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin and  ZKM – Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe.
