Description
With an impressive artistic career spanning over six decades, Daniel Spoerri (b. 1930, Galați, Romania) is one of the founders of the New Realism movement in Paris, known especially for his snare pictures series (tableaux pièges). Vertical tableaus capture the remains of daily life situations – objects such as leftovers or dirty dishes are mounted on the surfaces that they were found on, and then displayed vertically. The disorderly familiarity of the snare pictures, preserving bits and pieces of reality, were meant to stir uneasiness in the viewer.
Spoerri’s work is not limited to assemblage, and includes other media, such as text, drawing, collage, and sculpture. Dedicated solo exhibitions have taken place at the Centre Pompidou Paris, The Guggenheim Museum New York, Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia, Italy, or The Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany, to name a few. In 1997, he founded Il Giardino di Daniel Spoerri in Italy, a sculpture park that has showcased the works of over 50 international artists.
