Description
Doru Tulcan is a visual artist born in Arad, Romania, in 1943. He was part of the Sigma group, an important Romanian neo-avant-garde collective active in the 1970s, focusing on interdisciplinary connections between the visual arts, science and technology.
The series of experimental happenings of the 1970s fueled the artist’s explorations around the representation and mutability of the human body. Tulcan’s dense practice includes photography, drawing and installations, and, in recent years, painting. Inspired by the collaborative and interdisciplinary practices developed within the Sigma group (mathematics, cybernetics, architecture and visual arts), Doru Tulcan used monochrome photography, ink and watercolour as instruments to visually translate the layers of memory, inner and outer spaces.
In 1971, Tulcan was included in the Romanian Art Today exhibition at Richard Demarco Gallery within the framework of Edinburgh Festival, England. Recent showcases of his works happened at MUMOK, Vienna in 2022, and at the Art Encounters Foundation in Timișoara in 2021. His works are part of important collections such as the collection of the Tate Museum.
