Description
Fadi Yazigi is a Syrian artist born in 1976 in Damascus. He received his education at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, with a focus on sculpture. Yazigi is highly experimental with his paintings in terms of new mediums (sometimes painting on newspapers or furniture), techniques and materials. His subjects are consistent across all his mediums: half-human creatures, or half-abstract - half-realistic figures. He seems to be inspired by the ancient and medieval art of Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent, which is most apparent in his reliefs, or in the size of his subject’s eyes and the proportions of their limbs.
Yazigi’s oeuvre is centered around human emotion, often dealing with nostalgia and loneliness.
His use of color in paintings can be described often as black on white, with a blended rainbow that has been either carefully sprinkled or passionately smeared onto his surface.
This mixed media piece by Yazigi is a lively scene in which the artist has captured his subjects mid-conversation. The black outline figures are superposed with smaller, similar looking colorful replicas who look like ghosts of a brighter past. The crowdedness of the piece seems to recollect a more cheerful and festive past that is now lost.
