Florina Coulin

b. Roșiorii de Vede, Romania, 1947

Additional info:

Florina Coulin is a contemporary visual artist considered an important rediscovery on the Romanian art scene. Born in 1947, she studied at the Fine Art Academy in Bucharest. Shortly after graduating in the early 1970s, she settled in Germany where she still lives and works. Florina Coulin’s body of work emphasises topics of memory and transformation. Before moving to Germany, her practice benefited from the short wave of liberalization that swept through Romanian society from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s. Close friends with artists Ion and Marica Grigorescu, Coulin was part of a generation that began experimenting with painterly, graphic and photographic visual languages, and captured the fast-transforming everyday reality of a socialist city. While she is known for her lithography, drawings and etchings depicting urban construction sites often under demolition and building, Coulin’s colourful compositions of young people strongly imprint a carefree enthusiasm and a collective synergy that is both transient and poetic. Throughout her career, Florina Coulin has exhibited internationally, such as in Munich, Vienna, Istanbul, Villefranche and Iowa City. In Romania, she had solo shows at Galeria Curtea Veche (Bucharest, 2006 and 2007) and participated in the group shows Ion Grigorescu and friends (Mogoșoaia Palace, 2003), This Part That Seemingly Needs to Be Extruded Through a Place in My Body (The Project Salon, Bucharest, 2019). Her works are part of the Kontakt Collection amongst others, which focuses on conceptual art from Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
