Description
George Demetrescu Mirea (b. 1852 - d. 1934) was a Romanian painter and muralist. He studied painting at the School of Fine Art in Bucharest with esteemed artist Theodor Aman, later in his life becoming the school’s director. Demetrescu Mirea also undertook courses at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris under the guidance of famed French high-society portraitist Carolus-Duran. During his time in France, he participated in multiple Salon exhibitions.
Demetrescu Mirea is a representative of Romanian academic painting. His works primarily depict portraits of individuals from different social classes, including children, villagers, or known intellectuals, as well as monumental scenes inspired by Romanian history and mythology. Throughout his career, he created many frescos, notably at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Constanța and within many Bucharest estates.
