Description
Born in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon in 1980, Zoghbi is an upcoming contemporary Lebanese painter. She graduated from the Fine Art department of the Lebanese University in 2010 and has since had works exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions in Beirut, Algiers, etc., as well as in international art fairs such as the Egypt Int’l Art Fair in Cairo and the virtual opening of Art Dubai in 2020. Her most critically acclaimed works are part of a series revolving around buildings in mid-construction or whose construction has been halted or abandoned. Zoghbi’s mastery of perspective, dramatic compositions and playful detailing gives a certain complexity to her heavy, industrial subjects.
How color and life grows from the brute ugliness of the human footprint, and how these abandoned buildings become monuments of societal critique is highlighted by the artist’s use of the words written on a wall within her piece: “Something Went Wrong”. The painting contains an odd almost dream-like space where the heavy structure is left to its sad, pointless existence, facing its reflection in an indoor pool. The artist adorned the space with low-hanging strands of colorful, festive ribbons which seem to have been added to make the building look and feel more empty and ridiculously large than it already is.
