Additional info:
Gheorghe Fikl (b. 1968 in Timișoara, Romania) is a Romanian contemporary artist who studied painting at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca and graduated from the West University in Timișoara under the guidance of professor Romul Nuțiu. Fikl is considered one of the most provoking Romanian contemporary artists with a well-defined Neo-Baroque style. Fikl’s works illustrate outlandish scenes through intricate compositions, where nature and a decadent upper class grandeur are embodied in an absurd yet mesmerising way. The skilful use of contrasts between brighter and darker tones creates a powerful emotional provocation in which the central characters quickly capture the viewer’s gaze. Animality is monumentalised in Fikl’s reflections on death and decay, ritual and celebration. The works of Gheorghe Fikl have been exhibited locally and internationally, both in group and solo shows. His paintings are part of important private collections in Romania, the US, Germany, the UK, Italy and France, including that of King Charles III of England.
