Additional info:
Gheorghe Ilea is a Romanian painter who also works with other artistic mediums such as drawing and installation. Ilea graduated in 1984 from the University of Arts and Design in Cluj where he took a strong interest in conceptual art. His works have been presented locally and internationally, in both solo and group shows in countries such as Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Hungary and Romania. Through meticulous attention given to different textures used on the surfaces of his works, Ilea shapes a visual language that is unique and well-crafted. His practice revolves around the physicality of different elements inspired from the decayed exteriors of Romanian churches and the versatile textures of woven fabrics. Although his work is profoundly influenced by elements and motifs of Romanian rural culture, Ilea accomplishes to disclose them in a conceptual manner. According to the artist himself, Ilea is highly concerned with the relationship between the material essence and spiritual quality of “surface, coat, text, relocation”.
