Description

Nicolae Grigorescu noticed Gheorghe Petrașcu in college, helping him to obtain a scholarship at the Julian Academy in Paris. Alongside his studies in Paris, he had the opportunity to work in Bouguereau’s studio. Returning to Romania, he constantly organised solo exhibitions, having great feedback from critics and collectors. He exhibited regularly at the National Salons and at the Venice Biennale in several editions. Gheorghe Petrașcu was a pioneer for Romanian visual art, innovating with his technique similar to chiaroscuro, but giving life and materiality to his work through strong brushstrokes and unique contrasting colours.

Petrașcu was a prolific artist and besides his travels in multiple cities in France (following his master Grigorescu), Spain and Italy, he also focused on still lifes. He loved still lifes with books, approaching this subject mainly in the period 1930-1940. Petrașcu’s unique style used in the still lifes is characterised by the use of striking contrast between light and dark. The artist often used pure white next to black, shadowy elements. This technique and also the bold brushstrokes turned the still lifes into mesmerising and expressive three dimensional objects.
