Description

Gheorghe Șaru (b. 1920 in Checea, Romania – d. 2003 in New York, United States) was a Romanian painter who studied under the close supervision of artist Jean Alexandru Steriadi. Also known for his children’s book illustrations, Șaru studied painting in Iași and later received his Masters of Fine Arts in 1948 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest.

His work recasts Romanian folk art motifs from a modern perspective, rejecting the traditional representation of pleasant picturesque narratives. Over the years, his practice transitioned from figurative painting to complex non-figurative compositions. In the 1960s,  Șaru started to explore experimental and abstract representations through a meticulous approach to line and colour. His paintings capture various human and non-human subjects through complex topologies.

Șaru has had many national and international exhibitions throughout his career, for instance in France, the US, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Hungary and Mexico. His works are part of important museum collections such as those of The State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
