Description

Idel Ianchelevici (1909-1994) was a Russian Empire-born Romanian and Belgian sculptor and draughtsman. He was born in 1909 in Leova and moved to Belgium in 1928 to pursue his passion for sculpture and drawing. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de la Ville in Liège and was awarded first prize for statuary art in 1933. He held exhibitions in various cities around the world, including Brussels, Tel Aviv, Paris, and Amsterdam. In 1945, he became a Belgian national and his famous statue "The Call" was unveiled in La Louvière. He was awarded a grant to work in the Belgian Congo, where he designed three statues, and went on to exhibit his work in many countries. He settled in France in 1950, where he died in 1994 at the age of 86.

Ianchelevici's works are known for their expressiveness and power, and are inspired by "the exaltation of mankind at the height of its powers." He sculpted and drew on themes of working-class struggles, political prisoners, and the unformed figures of his young subjects. His figures are characterized by their mass and form, and he sought simplicity of form throughout his career.
