Description
Ion Alin Gheorghiu (1929-2001) was a Romanian visual artist who worked with painting and sculpture. He studied under the esteemed painter and professor Camil Ressu.
Gheorghiu struggled to gain recognition in the first years of his career until the withdrawal of the Red Army from Romania in 1958, since his works were considered too formalist to be exhibited in a time when art was constrained by the political requirements of Soviet-style Socialist Realism. After 1958, however, Gheorghiu exhibited widely across Europe and beyond. In 1964, his works were part of the Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennial. He was later awarded The Homage to Picasso Award in Italy in 1983.
Gheorghiu’s fascination with mythology is present all throughout his works. His paintings develop a highly distinctive style, as flows of shapes and vivid colours come to create symbiotic geometries.
