Description

Jan Berdyszak (1934 – 2014) was a Polish sculptor, painter, photographer, graphic artist, stage designer as well as art theoretician and professor.

His practice focused on the perception of space, during his stages of exploration, Berdyszak smashing the conventions – from refraining from the use of the classic quadrilateral shape of a painting and creating circular paintings arranged vertically to introducing real space into his canvases by cutting and opening them, to further liberating the painting from any predictable limit and exhibiting it into separate parts, various configurations and further on transforming them into spatial experiments through a variety of added techniques (such as plaster or woodcuts) creating multi-part, foldout forms which could be exhibited in radom arrangements.

His interest was to translate into visual language concepts like acceptance, infinite, possibility and other similar ideas sprung from the Far East philosophies, proposing a new series of forms designed to encourage meditation.

Further on, his interest found continuation in installations, objects and prints, sometimes reflecting the form of a frame, empty in the centre, highlighting the surroundings.
