Description

Jihad Abousleiman was born in Lebanon in 1953. At 20 years old, he started his studies in philosophy and fine art at the Lebanese University. Upon graduation, he gained a three-year study-abroad scholarship. He then moved to Paris and continued his training at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Art and also graduated in art history at the Sorbonne (cum laude). Abousleiman finally settled in Amsterdam, graduating also from the University of Amsterdam in 1985, with an art history degree. The artist is currently based in Amsterdam. His work has been shown in solo, as well as collective exhibitions in many cities around the world: namely Beirut, Amsterdam, London, Gothenburg (Sweden) and Amman.

Seemingly inspired by ancient art or mythology, this piece by Abousleiman has been built block by block, similarly to a stone wall. In a meditative exploration of texture, color and geometry, the artist creates a sense of movement on the canvas: the painting is set up like a theater play, his subjects are flat like cut out shapes entering and exiting a stage. Light behaves in an odd manner: it emanates from and disappears behind blocks of sky which creates a sense of perspective within the sky. The piece shows a playful curiosity in looking at nature and culture.
