Description
Liviu Stoicoviciu (b. 1942 in Cluj, Romania) is a Romanian painter, known for his abstract paintings. Stoicoviciu’s work differentiates itself from that of most Romanian artists of the second half of the 20th century. Unlike other artists inclined towards conceptualism, Stoicoviciu does not attempt to reconcile the abstract with the natural, instead constructing a highly personal visual language composed of shape, surface, and colour.
His long-lasting preoccupation with the golden ratio in graphical representations has resulted in an impressive series of works, from sketches and drawings to large paintings that illustrate multiplying fractals and spatial transformations. Deeply personal cartographies such as New York City Streets (2005) result from the artist’s introspective process.
The utopian recreation of abstract geometries to an urban scale was the central theme of the 2016 retrospective exhibition dedicated to Stoicoviciu at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest.
Since the late 1970s, Stoicoviciu’s works have been exhibited locally and internationally in Spain, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom, and most recently in 2023 at Galateca Gallery in Bucharest.
