Marieta Chirulescu

b. Sibiu, Romania, 1974

Additional info:

Marieta Chirulescu occupies a precise position within contemporary abstract painting, working between pictorial surface, technological reproduction and the unstable status of the image. Trained at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest and at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Nürnberg, where she graduated in 2004, she later became Professor of Painting at the Kunstakademie Münster. Her practice draws on scans, screenshots, digital printing processes and archival photography, including images connected to the Romanian dictatorship, which she subjects to successive acts of transfer, erasure and visual reduction. The resulting works retain traces of their sources while shifting attention towards the conditions through which images are produced, mediated and perceived. Chirulescu has presented solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Mainz, Kunsthalle Basel, White Cube Bermondsey, Kunstverein Nürnberg, Kunsthalle Lingen, Kurimanzutto in Mexico City, Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw, Plan B in Berlin and Galleria Fonti in Naples. Her work has also been included in recent group exhibitions at Salonul de proiecte in Bucharest, Kurimanzutto in New York and the Art Encounters Biennial in Timișoara. Awards and residencies such as the DAAD programme in Bucharest, Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, the Lingener Art Prize and Villa Massimo in Rome further situate her practice within an international field of post conceptual painting.
