Additional info:
Marinela Ciobanu is a Romanian contemporary artist who works primarily in painting. She studied painting at the George Enescu University in Iași and at the University of Salamanca in Spain on an Erasmus scholarship. Ciobanu is currently based in Iași, Romania, where she founded the art platform Iași Contemporary. Ciobanu’s painterly practice critically explores identity and isolation in daily life contexts. The artist is equally interested in how nature is symbolically represented in contemporary society, particularly in private spaces and in relation to intimacy. The home environment is often present in Ciobanu’s paintings – subtly so in her extensive exploration of common houseplants leaves, where she develops careful and detailed depictions of plant fragility alongside their generative strength through vivid colours. Leaves become metaphorical powerhouses of emotions, harboured across human and nonhuman organisms. The works of Marinela Ciobanu have been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions across Romania and abroad. Her paintings are part of numerous private collections
