Description
Marius Bunescu (b. 1881 - d. 1971) was a painter, founding member of the Fine Art Union of Romanian artists, and museum administrator. Bunescu enrolled to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 1906. His education influenced the painting style of his early years as an artist, being particularly marked by German impressionism and the practice of portraitist and landscape artist Hermann Groeber.
Bunescu’s works primarily depict scenic landscapes of urban and seaside nature and architecture such as harbours, quiet street corners, churches, houses, and snow-covered pathways. Abandoning the loose strokes of impressionist painting yet maintaining its attention to colour, Bunescu constructs a unique and personal atmosphere juxtaposed on clearly defined, recognisable sceneries.
Throughout his career, Bunescu exhibited widely in Romania and abroad, receiving multiple international and national awards for his artistic achievements. In 2017, the Municipal Museum of Bucharest dedicated a retrospective exhibition to the artist. His works are part of museum collections such as the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest.
