Description

Marko Čelebonović graduated in Law from the Sorbonne in 1922, but simultaneously attended the University and the private art school known as the Académie de la Grande Chaumière , where he took sculpture classes with the famous French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle until 1923, when he fully embraced his profession as a painter. In 1947, he was employed as a professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade. Čelebonović was a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade and the Vice-President of the International Association of Art (UNESCO). He exhibited his work in various solo shows at among others, Galerie Druet (Paris), Art Pavilion Cvijeta Zuzorić, Galerie de l’Elysée (Paris), Galerie des Beaux-Arts (Paris), Gallerie Jacque Dubourg (Paris), Galerie de Paris, Gallery Wolfsberg (Zurich), Gallery Stiebel (Paris), Gallery Motte (Geneve), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgrade), Galerie Christiane Colin (Paris), Gallery Georges Barry (Saint Tropez), Gallery of the Association of Graphic Artists (Belgrade), Gallery of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Gallery of the Yugoslav Cultural Center in Paris, the Art Pavilion in Zagreb, and more. He also participated in group exhibitions with artists from Serbia and Yugoslavia, both in Serbia and abroad. His works can be found in numerous museums and private collections, including the National Museum (Belgrade), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgrade), the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection (Novi Sad), the Art Collection of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Belgrade), the State Art Collection of the Royal Compound (Belgrade), Gallery of Matica Srpska (Novi Sad), the Art Collection of the Gallery of the Central Military Club of Serbia (Belgrade), the Museum of Yugoslavia (Belgrade), the Belgrade City Museum, the Heritage House (Belgrade), and more. Marko Čelebonović received several awards during his career, including the Award for Painting at the First Memorial of Nadežda Petrović in Čačak (1960), the Seventh of July Award for Life Achievement (1963), the Gold Plaque for Painting at the Third Triennial of Visual Arts in Belgrade (1967) and the AVNOJ Award IN 1974. Marko Čelebonović passed away in Saint Tropez on July 23rd, 1986.
