Description
Born in 1987 in Moldova, Maxim Liulca is a visual artist who lives and works in Cluj. Over the course of his career, Liulca has developed a highly distinctive style, anchored in an affectionate critical process.
Liulca’s paintings, at first glance not dissimilar to old Romanian carpets, employ motifs that are sourced from a wide range of cultural references, from folkloric Romanian fabrics to 1970s geometric wallpapers. His tendency towards the nonfigurative and use of abstract shapes is equally influenced by artistic movements such as Dada and Russian Constructivism. Liulca’s aim is, in his own words, to construct “virtual-absurd realities” that are ambiguous, navigating contemporary myths and clichés that circulate through society.
Solo exhibitions dedicated to Liulca’s works have taken place at Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles, USA; Baril Gallery in Cluj-Napoca, Romania; Spazio A Gallery in Pistoia, Italy. His works have been featured in group shows at Art Encounters Biennale in Timișoara, Romania; Museo Capodimonte, Naples, Italy; Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland.
