Description

Mimi Șaraga Maxy (1923 - 2006) was a Romanian-Jewish artist who worked primarily with painting, graphics, and object-based art. Between 1941 and 1944, she studied painting at the Jewish School of Arts under the guidance of Max Hermann Maxy, whom he married later in her life. The school was a private initiative for students excluded from the national education system due to the rampant antisemitic institutional and state policies in Romania.

The artist’s works, oscillating between figurative and abstract painting, are highly anchored in social realities, strongly transmitting the grief and hope felt during a lifetime of war, systemic discrimination, and authoritarianism. In 1982, she became a member of the Association of Painters and Sculptors in Israel.

The painting Composition reflects Șaraga Maxy’s experimentation with shape and colour. The canvas becomes an archive of her wide-ranging artistic influences from within 20th-century art, which together suggest her radically modern understanding of society and the self.

Șaraga Maxy’s works have been exhibited in France, Romania, and Israel, being part of important public and private collections, many of her paintings and designs realised before 1982 being part of the Brăila Museum’s public collection.
