Description

Mircea Suciu (b. 1978, Baia Mare, Romania) is one of the most important visual artists in Romania. Suciu is part of the so-called Cluj School tradition of painting, tackling sociopolitical topics in the context of Romania’s tumultuous transition from state socialism to global capitalism. His multi-layered figurative works uniquely combine the technique of monotype with painting, constructing a largely monochromatic universe. As Suciu’s works often depict enigmatic characters having their faces covered, the onlooker is struck by the lack of accessibility to their gaze. Furthering poignant critiques of the effects that war, religious fundamentalism, and extreme nationalism have on civilians, his works are swept by an affective atmosphere of pain, suffering, and aggression.

Suciu has exhibited works internationally, in major art institutions and biennials such as the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in the United States, Espace Louis Vuitton in Paris, France, the Weserburg Museum in Bremen, Germany, the 11th Istanbul Biennial in Turkey, Art Encounters 2016 in Timișoara, Romania, or the 2014 Gwangju Biennial in South Korea.

Exhibited in "The Fracture" exhibition, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest, Romania (2015)
