Description

Moustapha Farroukh (1901 - 1957) is a Lebanese artist from the mountain village of Ehden. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

Today, he is considered a pioneer of modern art in Lebanon and helped shape Lebanese art in terms of where it stands in relation to the global art scene, being defiant of colonial ideas. Bringing the nude into the world of Lebanese art, he was interested in experimenting with the way the Levantine public would interact with such art.

Farroukh's art is known for its unapologetically realistic style in an art world that had long let go of realism. He often depicted scenes from everyday life, portraits of laborers and traditional Lebanese landscapes in his works.

This work by Farroukh shows a traditional rural Lebanese landscape, realistically painted but with an early modern feel in the sense that it’s subtly experimental in texture. The artist’s hand is light, blurring the entire scene as if to give it the texture of a cloud, including hard objects such as stone and brick.
