Description
Nicolae Romaniţan (b.1991, Cugir, Romania) is a Romanian contemporary artist who studied Graphics at the University of Art and Design in Cluj. He is a versatile artist who works with mediums such as painting, photography, and drawing.
Romanițan’s process is heavily influenced by video games, mediaeval manuscripts, uncanny animations, and printed media. The multiple realities disclosed by these cultural artefacts assemble a quirky yet impeccable apparatus of critique, revealing the artist’s existential concerns about recent historical events, related to alienation, violence, grief, posthumanity, and the absurdity of war. Romanițan’s diverse colour palette depicts the intense emotional state of his tortured, hollow, and defeated characters.
The work The Crowning (2023) could be read as an emblem, a cautionary tale of power that channels the horrific power of the gothic not only by means of the monstrous characters, but also through its narrative complexity and graphic symmetries.
His works have been exhibited locally in Romania, in both solo and group shows, and internationally in countries such as Germany, Norway, Denmark, and Belgium.
