Additional info:
Oscar Han was a Romanian sculptor and writer, part of the Group of Four, together with artists Nicolae Tonitza, Ștefan Dimitrescu, and Francisc Șirato. He studied sculpture and drawing at the Academy of Arts in Bucharest, under the guidance of Dimitrie Paciurea and Frederick Storck. Throughout his career, Han’s work included many monumental sculptures, as well as smaller scale ones. Han’s sculptural practice is figurative and gestural, able to easily convey emotion through the shapes, volume, and textures of its materiality. The sculpture Couple explores one of the major themes in Han’s practice, that of love and passion. The two lovers support each other’s contorted bodies in an unusual posture, resting on each other’s shoulders in a corporeal metaphor for the desire to become one. Oscar Han exhibited his works in Romania and abroad, including in Venice, Antwerp, Paris, The Hague, Amsterdam, and Barcelona.
