Description
Posterity remembers Oszkár Glatz, born in 1872 in Budapest, as one of the greatest naturalist painters of the post-impressionist artistic movement in Baia Mare. In 1893, he became a student of the Julian Academy in Paris. After his travels to Munich, he joined the group of international artists gathered during the summer in Baia Mare. He was a member of the Magyar Impresszionisták és Naturalisták Köre (Union of Hungarian Impressionists and Naturalists) and took part in the founding of the Szinyei Merse Pál Society.
Between 1912 and 1938, he was a professor at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.
Founded in 1896 by the prestigious Armenian painter Simon Hollósy, who was originally from Sighetu Marmației, The Painting Colony from Baia Mare gathered, throughout the years, an impressive number of artists from the most diverse cultural spaces of Europe. The colony offered a rich and diverse artistic heritage, contributing to the international wide-spreading of the Baia Mare phenomenon.
Oszkár Glatz had numerous exhibitions throughout Europe and his works can be found in the most important museums and collections.
The two children are a common motif in Glatz’s work. He dedicated part of his work to representing children at different ages and in various poses. These themes show us that he was a young spirit, connected to childhood and nature, allowing himself to be inspired by this subject his whole life. The light and warm colours in his work amplify the expressiveness and kindness of the two children, managing to recreate the same atmosphere in the eyes of each viewer.
