During World War II, he fought as a partisan in the Apuan Alps and participated in the liberation of Modena.
Volta's photography career started in Berlin, where he took his first shots. He went on to become one of the founders of the Associated Photographers, the first cooperative of photographers in Italy. He later participated in a course in Elementary Photography organised by the US army in Berlin and collaborated with the weekly "Il Mondo" for several years.
After moving to Paris, he photographed some of the most prominent writers, artists, and intellectuals of the 20th century and made documentaries for RAI TV. He worked for the Rai correspondence office in Paris and became interested in Sardinia and the phenomenon of muralism. His photographs were featured in a major exhibition on masonry in Caen, Normandy in 1981 and toured Italy in the following years.
In 1987, he chose to settle in the town of San Sperate in Sardinia, where he lived until his death from cancer in 2011 at the age of 85.
