Description

Ziffer Sándor was an exceptional child, becoming a student at the School of Fine Arts in Budapest when he was only 15 years old. He decided to abandon it in order to study in Munich but returned afterward to Budapest, where he studied with Simon Hollósy. Later in life he went to Paris with his friend Béla Czóbel. Ziffer travelled a lot and had a career full of obstacles due to the two World Wars.

In 1906 he went to Baia Mare for the first time but didn’t settle there. He travelled to Paris and Munich and returned to Baia Mare only occasionally, especially in the warm seasons. He worked and exhibited in Baia Mare as an independent artist, but after 1910 his life became quite hectic. The First World War found him in Germany where he was forced to stay until its end. When he returned to Baia Mare, he was not welcomed by the artistic community. Despite this, he continued to paint and exhibit in Romania. In the early 1930s, he opened the doors of his studio in Baia Mare only for young people expelled or excluded from fine arts schools due to political reasons. His bravery and combative personality set an example for his generation and subsequent ones.

Ziffer’s art embodies the post-impressionist, fauvist and expressionist style, emphasising vivid and bright colours despite the struggles he encountered throughout his life. The work Pioneers Playing Chess is a masterpiece made eight years before he passed away. The work represents a moment of silence between three pioneers playing chess. Using his typical chromatic palette, Ziffer is preserving the bright and calm atmosphere that helped him to overcome the difficulties in his life.
