Description

Șerban Epure (b. 1940 – d. 2018) was an internationally esteemed artist associated with the Romanian Neo-Avant-Garde of the late 1960s. Originally trained as an engineer, Epure gave up his profession to concentrate on his painting practice, developing a conceptual approach closely tied to his scientific education. In 1980, he emigrated to the United States, where he studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Epure’s paintings explore the spatial possibilities of the canvas as a two-dimensional environment through abstract geometries and mathematically organised aerobics of (non)colours, constructing new relationships between forms. His work bridges art and science by emphasizing their shared elements of artificiality and abstraction from the natural world.

Beginning in the 1970s, Epure’s works were exhibited internationally alongside prominent figures in the digital arts, such as Georges Charbonnier and Peter Kreiss. Notably, he participated in the Paris Biennale for Young Artists (1971 and 1973) and the 25th Edinburgh Festival (1971). His works are part of important collections internationally, including those of MOMA New York and the V&A Museum in London.
