Additional info:
Sergiu Toma has developed a pictorial language that combines a disciplined approach to representation with a subtle exploration of painting’s material and psychological depths. Educated at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca and the Accademia Albertina delle Belle Arti in Turin, he completed his Master’s degree in 2011 and subsequently undertake a residency at the Romanian Academy in Rome. His artistic formation, rooted in both Renaissance and Baroque traditions, is evident in his command of chiaroscuro and theatrical composition, while his later works move toward a freer and more introspective handeling of the medium. Toma’s imagery oscillates between the intimate and the staged, where domestic interiors and open landscapes share a shared atmosphere of suspension and enigma. Memory functions as both theme and method, as blurred contours and translucent layers of pigment evoke the instability of recollection. This interplay between presence and erasure, light and obscurity, defines his ongoing investigation of painting as an autonomous field of expression rather than a vehicle for narrative content. His practice situates him within the Cluj School of contemporary painting, a milieu recognised for its sustained dialogue with figurative tradition and conceptual restraint. He has exhibited internationally in projects such as Romanian Scenes at Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris and The Wanderers. Contemporary Painting from Cluj at Taittinger Gallery in New York, and is represented by Galleria Doris Ghetta in Italy and Galerie Fravi in Switzerland. His works, held in both Romanian and international collections, attest to a consistent engagement with the poetics of perception and the mutable boundaries of memory.
