Additional info:
Trained in the Graphic Arts Department of the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, under Eugen Popa and Simion Iuca, Simona Runcan developed a practice situated between printmaking, drawing, painting, object and installation. Her work is organised through sustained series, from The Presence of Objects, Children’s Games and The Laws of Balance to Lazarus Waiting, Interior, Icons, Inclinations and Silent Cohabitations. Across these cycles, Runcan examined the status of the object, the relation between form and space, textile surfaces, drapery, void, shadow and the slow transformation of recurrent motifs. Her exhibitions include The Laws of Balance at Galeria Simeza in 1979, Still Lifes at Galeria Simeza in 1986, Lazarus Waiting at Galeria Catacomba in 1994 and Interior, Icons, Inclinations in Bucharest, Bistrița and Cluj. Her work was also shown in international group exhibitions and print biennials. The 2016 retrospective at Centrul Cultural Palatele Brâncovenești, Mogoșoaia, accompanied by a monographic catalogue, repositioned her practice within the history of Romanian art after 1960.
