Description
Sorin Dumitrescu (b.1946 –d.2024) was an esteemed painter, graphic artist, and member of the Romanian Academy. He studied at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest under the close supervision of painter and professor Corneliu Baba. Part of a vibrant student community, he developed his practice alongside the likes of Mihai Cismaru, Ștefan Câlția, and Sorin Ilfoveanu.
Dumitrescu took a dissident stance towards the communist regime, visible throughout his artistic activities. A powerful voice in his generation, Dumitrescu’s compositions helped define the emergence of the Neo-Orthodox style of painting in Romania, reviving folk art and transcendental themes. He developed a unique visual discourse on the role of architecture in spirituality. In the 1980s, he actively resisted party-imposed aesthetics as part of the 9+1 Group, alongside Horia Bernea, Marin Gherasim, and Vasile Gorduz.
His work has been exhibited internationally, in countries such as France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Romania, in both solo and group shows. His works are part of prominent collections, such as that of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest (MNAC).
