Description

Spiru Chintilă (b. 1921 in Bazargic/ Dobrich, Romania/ Bulgaria - d. 1985 in Bucharest, Romania) was a Romanian artist with an extensive interest in Cubism. In his formative years, Chintilă received guidance from professors and painters such as Francisc Sirato, Camil Ressu, and Alexandru Ciucurencu, and together with painters Ion Pacea and sculptor Constnatin Lucaci  formed a new generation of modernist artists in Romania.

His paintings aptly deconstruct space and object through a rigorous technique, carefully developed over the course of many years. Chintilă’s balanced colours and complex geometrical reconstructions of still life, quotidian activities, or industrial labour amplify a multiplicity of emotions by harmoniously complicating the relationship between reality and representation.

The painter was highly dedicated to his work, spending most of his time in his studio where he completed over 2000 paintings, drawings, and tapestries. His practice also included large-scale murals and mosaics, commissioned by the socialist regime, producing some of the most compelling pieces of monumental art at the time across Romania. Some of Chintilă’s mosaics were realised in collaboration with artists such as Simona Vasiliu and Romeo Voinescu.

Chintilă’s works have been presented nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows in Hungary, Greece, France, Bulgaria, United States, Mexico, Finland, Brazil, among others.
