Description

Stefan Gierowski (1925-2022) was a prominent Polish painter and draughtsman, described as a classic of Polish modernity.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and the Jagiellonian University, where he developed an interest in contemporary avant-garde. In the late 50’s he transitioned from a figurative style to non-figurative painting, which became his main area of interest. Throughout his career, Gierowski explored various artistic currents including post-cubism and op-art.

He made a significant contribution to Polish graphic design and poster art.

His works are recognized for his bold and dynamic use of colour, his strong sense of composition, as well as his ability to convey powerful messages through simple, straightforward forms. Light, space and movement reigned in his practice described as being “autonomous abstraction”.
