Description

Victor Brauner spontaneously remarked about a black stone streaked with white, found in a stream:
"On reflection, I told myself, surely, it’s just missing one small thing for this character to come alive." This reflects a persistent "geological nostalgia" in Victor Brauner’s work.

Victor Brauner also stated:
"My aim, if possible, is to identify with the animal. It’s a way of going further, of disorienting oneself, of losing one’s sense of presence in the real world. For me, the dog is me: I literally identify with the dog. This allows me great freedom of action—because in reality, the dog is quite insignificant. I can better observe myself as a dog than as a human being.

The cat, first of all, is nocturnal. It represents the moon. Then, it is silent. It sees far. In any case, I can associate it with everything that concerns inner life, the moon, the night, and possibly water.

The fish symbolizes inner life, the dream of a lost paradise.

The snake is the only animal that maintains contact with the earth, with its warmth and moisture. It is admired and feared at the same time."

Painter, sculptor and Surrealist poet Victor Brauner was trained in Romania, Austria and France. Going through several stages - dadaist, abstractionist, expressionist, his work is infused by the realm of dreams and the unconscious, with an emphasis on occultism. Ranging from mythologies to ancient world cultures, his art constitutes itself as a fertile melange of sources that find their meeting point in Surrealism. In 1966, Brauner was invited to represent France at the Venice Biennale. His works are included in some of the most important collections worldwide, including the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation in Venice, Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection and the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
