Victor Roman

Mărtiniș, Harghita, Romania, 1937 - Paris, France, 1995

Additional info:

Victor Roman was a Romanian artist who worked primarily with sculpture. He graduated from the Nicolae Grigorescu Fine Arts Institute in 1960, later receiving a scholarship to continue his studies at the Royal College of Art, London. He permanently relocated to Paris in 1968. Roman’s works include monumental works in public spaces across France and Romania, as well as smaller scale sculptures, design objects and drawings. Together, his works show the artist’s distinctive approach to sculptural forms, constructing surreal, often anthropomorphic bodies through unusual volumes and undulations. In bronze and sometimes wood, his sculptures represent modernist explorations of mythology and cultural archetypes, in compelling exercises that reimagine the collective subconscious. Throughout his career, Roman exhibited his works in both solo and group exhibitions in countries such as Romania, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. His works are part of important public and private collections, including the National Museum of Art, Bucharest, Romania; the Art Museum of Legnano, Italy; the University of Los Angeles, California; the National Fund for Contemporary Art (FNAC), Paris, France.
